This tut will teach you how to make a simple userbar, or tag, with this sort of quality:

First you need to open a new document, 350x19 pixels, transparent background, then open the render you wish to put in the tag, in my case Clan Infectionist's logo:

You need to find the two most dominant colors in your render and set them as your primary and secondary colors, in by case; of course, black and green, however, I'm going to make it a darker green and a lighter black (grey):

You need to set those two colors as a horizontal gradient onto the background of your tag. Fill the transparent layer with whatever your first color is, it doesn't matter, then double click the layer to open the "Blending Options" dialog, click "Gradient Overlay", then click the little down arrow and select the first one on the top row:

Set the angle to 0o degrees, then click ok, you should end up with this (with your colors, of course):

Make a new layer above the gradient one and name it scanlines (refer to my scanlines mini-tut here.) Click Edit > Fill and select your scanlines pattern, then click ok. Set the layer's opacity to 30-40%, you can also mess around with inverting the color making it white if you want, it might look better:

Now create another new layer on top, take out your elliptical marquee tool and draw an oval 351x25 pixels (you can check in the info window), move it until it snaps to the top, then fill it with white. Set that layer's transparency to 35%:

Now, insert your render on top of all other layers, resize it and move it around until you are happy with how it looks, I removed the black background from my render before doing this:

Finally, time for the text. Select a font that looks good against the background, and that fits with the render. Put in whatever you want, in my case it will be "Clan Infectionist Fan".

And that's it, after you've put in your text, save it as a png and upload it to your favorite image host.

Final Result:

Scanlines Mini-Tut

Scanlines are simply vertical, horizontal, or oblique lines that are usually semi-transparent, and add some depth to an image or, in this case, a tag.

To make a scanlines pattern for oblique (angled) scanlines going from bottom-left to top-right, do the following:

Open a new document, 4x4, transparent background, and zoom in all the way. Take out the pencil tool (click and hold the pen tool and select pencil) and set your primary color to black. Draw a line from the bottom-left to the top-right (there should be 4 squares). Click Edit > Define Pattern and name it Scanlines.

That's it, you've got scanlines ready to use.
