In this tutorial, I will teach you how to effectively make your text have a dirty, grunge effect, using nothing more than Photoshop CS2's base features, giving it a more creepy look and feel.

First lets start with a new blank canvas, I made mine 700x200 pixels to give myself plenty of extra room. Once you have created it, fill it with black. Now select the text tool and type the text you want to change, you can use whatever font you like, here is mine:

As you can see though, the text is not centered, to do this, right click the text layer that you created, and click "Rasterize Type", then type ctrl+a, then ctrl+x, then ctrl+v, this will select all, cut the selection, then paste it back, but centered. You should wind up with this:

Thats better. Now that you have that done, lets add some flare to the edges. Click Filter > Stylize > Wind, set the Method to Wind and the Direction to From the Right, repeat this process but change the Direction to From the Left. Now lets make it go vertical, since Wind only goes horizontal, we'll have to turn our canvas on its side, to do this, click Image > Rotate Canvas > 90o CW, apply the same Wind filters for the rotated canvas, first From the Right, then From the Left. When you are done, flip the canvas back to normal by clicking Image > Rotate Canvas > 90o CCW, you will end up with this:

Now we need some color, there are multiple methods to add color, but for this project, the best way I have found is to click Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Color Balance. Mess with the controls until you find a color you like, I found that these setting work best for a glowy orange color:

Preserve Luminosity: checked

Shadows:
Cyan: 100
Magenta: 50
Yellow: -100

Midtones:
Cyan: 100
Magenta: 50
Yellow: -100

Highlights:
Cyan: 50
Magenta: 25
Yellow: 0

Which will give you this:

We're not quite done yet though. While this may have a particularly spiky look, its not quite the look we are...looking for. To complete your grunge effect, we need to apply a Diffuse Glow filter, to do this, merge your text layer with the background layer by right-clicking the text layer, and clicking "Merge Down", then, with your merged layer selected, click Filter > Distort > Diffuse Glow. It'll turn out different for everyone, but the end effect will be something like this:

And you're done, I'm sure there is more you could do to it now that you've gotten this done, but, thats not part of the tutorial.
