Advertising (both ways)

Some of you might remember way back when, I put some Google Adsense advertisements on the site. They were actually quite successful, but I guess they got a bit abused and my account was disabled. Well, a few months later (about a year ago now) I managed to get them working again. This was about the time I was working on getting the new site design pushed out and in the comotion, I forgot the new email address I used to sign for the Adsense account (it wasn't my regular email address.) I've been trying for months to recover my login name with no luck, but I finally got an email back from Adsense support and got that email back, which means I can start putting the ads up again. I know they're ugly, but I'll try to incorporate them into the site so they look...less ugly. Please, don't abuse them, this could be a great way to cover the expenses of running the site. You'll start seeing the ads soon, I'm sure.

Now, I did say both ways, and I wasn't talking about the kind of "both ways" that Poison goes. I recently got a letter from Google Adwords with a promotional card in it giving me a $75 Adwords credit. I decided to go for it and sign up with the promotional card, so I now have a Google Adwords account loaded with $75 and I can start displaying ads for the site through Adsense and next to Google search results. I'll probably need your guys' help figuring out what I should put in the ads.

There's a problem, though. Well, I suppose it's not a problem because it could actually be a good thing. Dreamhost, the nice company that hosts Infectionist, also gives me a $75 promotional credit for Adwords, and promotional credits can only be used once, so Ihave an extra Adwords code that I can't use, that's going to expire at the end of this month. I'd like to give it to one of you, if you promise to advertise this site (if you have your own site you can advertise it, too, I just want to make sure that if I'm giving you this code, that Infectionist gets something out of it.) I'll give it to the first person that asks nicely enough, I'll even tell you how to set up the account so that you don't have to put in a credit card or bank account.

So, good news, topped with more good news, smothered in creamy, delectible potential good news. I love it!

Oh wow, that is pretty sweet! Do you think you could briefly describe how Adsense works? Like, do you get paid for number of clicks, how many ads do you have to put up, do you control what the ads are, how do the ads get "abused," does adsense cover the whole month's expenses, etc... I totally know nothing about the topic...

I would be interested in your offer, I just don't know that I'll have time with work and school to get a site up and running. I want to really badly though. Maybe if I find some free time, and you would like to offer a little guidance, I'll do it.

Adsense works by putting a small piece of Javascript on your page. That Javascript parses the page's contents and returns advertisements that are related to it (for example, here we would get ads related to gaming.) I don't really want to get into how it works because Google also takes a look at any sites that are using Adsense and if they see the word "click" to many times they'll think I'm asking for help. Also I'm not really sure exactly how it works...

As far as adwords goes, I havne't set mine up yet (just made the account and put in the promo code,) but you create an ad and set how much you want to charge for it. It is displayed in other people's adsense publishings and also in results next to google when related terms are searched for.

And I thought you had a website, what happened to it?

oh cool, so when you create your ad how do you get people to purchase it?

as for my site, it was really just an experiment and an exercise in learning all of the involved tech. but it was being hosted from an old beat up laptop in my room that ran incredibly hot and loud. i got annoyed with it and decided i would wait till i bought some hosting or built a proper server.

Well, you already have my offer on Dreamhost, my Promo code saves you money and helps pay for the site. Now would be an excellent time to take that up.

And no one has to purchase the ads, they're simply added to the network. When you set it up, you specify keywords related to your ad. When people search for relevant keywords, or when the content on their site is relevant, your ad will be shown. If it gets clicked, I pay the site displaying the ad (from the funds I have in my account already.)

Ah I see. Ok, so my current goal for the weekend is to get ALL of next weeks homework done so that I can play Halo Reach all week. (and there is a LOT of homework). I will add to that goal purchasing space from Dreamhost. Hopefully I can get all this done in two days. If I do, I'll ask you for the Adwords promotion. And whatever my site becomes, I WILL advertise Infectionist for sure.
