Today I will be reviewing a game very close to me, Penumbra: Overture. Penumbra was one of the first true atmospheric horror games that didn't just startle me with cheap jump out scares, Penumbra used atmosphere and sound to scare the living hell out of me.
The game starts off with the character, Philip receiving a letter from his father, Howard, who deserted him before he were born, telling him to come to a isolated location in Greenland, and destroy the entrance. Of course, curiosity takes over and Philip enters a forgotten mine shaft at the coordinates his father gave him, and soon finds himself surrounded by all sorts of dangers, like starving feral dogs, and even giant subterranean worms.
The gameplay is focused mainly on puzzle solving. A really cool feature is that everything you do is controlled by the mouse. To open a drawer, you click the handle, and pull back with your mouse.
To open a door, you click the doorknob, and pull to the opposite way. Combat is discouraged, as it is pretty hard to use the limited weapons you are given. To attack, you mouse click and hold the left mouse button, and move the mouse where you want to swing at. This is purposely hard, so most of the time you sneak around.
When sneaking, you gain "nightvision" which is a blue hue around your screen which allows you to see in the dark easier. There are a few items you can use to help you to get past enemies, like beef jerky, which you can throw near dogs to distract them.
The story is probably the best I've ever known in a game, and there are tons of strange twists and dark secrets, though I won't spoil any of that here.
Penumbra is a great game that is one my top 10 list, though once your done with singleplayers there's nothing else to do. This is definitely a rent game... if you can find it anywhere other than steam. _________________ Killing Floor is mah sheiznit
