Halo3Shots

I don't know if any of you have noticed, but Haloscreenshots.net appears to be out of commission, at least for right now. Apparently they've used up their disk space allotment on HBO's servers.

A while back I set up a quick little script to copy all the screenshots from a person's Recent Screenshots to the Infectionist server. Originally it only did my screenshots, but I made it able to do any supplied gamertag's shots as well; only thing is, I've never really told anyone about it. Well, I'm telling you now.

Halo3Shots will be the replacement for haloscreenshots.net, backing up people's Halo 3 screenies and keeping them forever (or at least for a really long time). I've got a decent system set up, but I'm not 100% operational yet. I still want to build some sort of gallery and make the transferring process a little cleaner, right now it's kinda slow and there's nothing to look at while it's working.

Anywho, Add this to the list of projects, along with the HD Recording Service, the new Frontpage design, SEO-ifying the forum and site, and all the other things I've been doing to try to bring this place back to life.

We have like infinite bandwidth. Remember that thign we did with PHP that gave us bandwidth but our site would be a little glitchy.

KJ, I have "unlimited" bandwidth. The reason I put quotes is because there's no such thing as unlimited, but Dreamhost is really good about living up to what they say. I've hit the servers pretty hard with things like the Cutscenes and whatnot and they haven't said a word, and pictures are considerably smaller than HD movies.

Pivot, 360 Zone used a script that I wrote to make theirs, and he didn't do a very good job. Mine came months before that, I just never publicized it.

Poison, the unlimited space and bandwidth has nothing to do with PHP. You're getting 2 things mixed up. I volunteered to have my account moved over to a new server system that was being tested, and in return they gave me unlimited bandwidth and disk space, but there might have been problems. Later I had to upgrade the PHP version that was being used here, which could also have caused problems...neither really did.

Hmmmm, this is awkward. I haven't touched this in ages, until just a few days ago. Oddly, I'd forgotten all about it, until I was looking through the server and noticed the folder. I'm not sure if I'll be starting work on this again, it comes in handy, but I'm just no good at designing, I don't know how to make it look good. The script is solid though, works like it should. I'll need a way for the server to automatically transfer the pictures periodically from Bungie's servers, I'll probably use a cron job for that (scheduled server task). I don't know how often I'll have it do it though, I might have it download a list of the files once every 6 hours, then once a day use that list to transfer the actual files and purge the list, so that I'm not hitting Bungie's servers with a ton of requests multiple times a day.

Ok, so I have been slowly working on this, adjusting things and all that. I did some research and, though it will be a little more complicated than it is with Halo 3 and ODST screenshots, I should be able to get Reach screenshot transfers working.

The reason it'll be a little more complicated is because Halo 3 and ODST screenshots provide an RSS feed, allowing me to parse that feed with built in PHP functions to get the information I need. Reach offers no such feed (as of now) so I'll have to download the actual Recent Screenshots page and parse it. I doubt it will have any impact on the performance of the script at all, but I just hate parsing, it's messy.

Anywho, though the service isn't 100% operational yet (it works it's just not pretty, and there's no gallery) if I get Reach screenshots working I'll release it for public use, so you can all back up your screenshots.

I'm also changing the name to HaloShots, since Reach isn't Halo 3.

I'll keep you guys updated, because I <3 you.
