Post subject: Infectionist Toolbar questions |
|
|
Ok, I was visiting the site that lets me customize the Infectionist Toolbar and I have some questions for you. Answer the poll, but also post with the answers to these questions:
What is he feature of the toolbar you use most often?
What is the feature you use least often (or never?)
What would you like to see added to the toolbar?
What would you like to see removed from the toolbar?
I can add new things and I was thinking a "most recent forum post" API, but to add that I'd need to remove something else, to make sure I keep the toolbar under 1024 pixels in width. There are a few things that I use a lot on the toolbar, the one I personally use the most is the forum button, takes me straight to the forum. I also, on occasion, use the content menu that brings up links to News, Tutorials, and the Podcast. One thing Inever use is the radio player, I listen to all my music straight from Windows Media Player, myself. It's nice to have the frontpage news ticker there.
One thing I did add was the ability to make money off new Toolbar installations. Now I'll get paid everytime someone installs the toolbar, and it's a pay-per-install rate. For the first 30 days I get a bonus for each install and the rate is determined by how "sticky" the toolbar is, which I assume means how much people use it. It's not enough to just install it then disable it, it needs to be used for me to get paid. I overdrew on my checking account this month because Dreamhost, our webhost, doesn't charge on fees less than $9.24 and I only had a balance of $0.80, meaning this month I got charged $11.75 and I overdrew. I don't want that to happen again, I lost $40 ($12+$28 overdraw fee.)
Anyway, let me know how you use the toolbar. I know the users are very few, only 5 active users total, but let me know what I can do to make you decide to use it, to change your mind. Please? _________________

Well I have to remove something if I'm going to add the forum post thing. I can't remove the search bar, I've tried. I might remove chat, but it's been used recently and will probably need to be used again in the future.
I was looking for ways to integrate Youtube videos into it as well, each user has an RSS feed of their recent videos, so I could add that for Infectionist's videos, but idk.
What do you mean, recently uploaded videos? or videos they recently watched? _________________

A cookie is a piece of information stored by a webserver into a visitor's computer. It's used so that the site can "remember" that user and their settings. Things like "remember me" when logging into a forum, those are set by cookies. This forum sets a cookie with a string for the autologin feature. Without that cookie you wouldn't be able to log in automatically everytime you visit, you'd have to manually do it each time. I can read this forum's cookies because phpbb publically posts information about them, but Youtube probably doesn't, and if it does have a cookie, it's probably just to tell youtube.com where to look on the server for that person's browsing history.
What I could do here though is have something like each user's information (private messages, recent replies to posts, etc) be displayed in the toolbar for that person, if that user is signed in, by reading that cookie. I'm not 100% sure I'd be able to do that, but I might.
I don't think I'd be able to do something like what you were suggesting with the Youtube thread, since that would require parsing the thread's formatting, which would be difficult with multiple people posting them, and it would take a while as the list got longer, which means it would take longer for the browser to load with the toolbar turned on. You see? _________________
