PostPost subject: Halo Wars Cutscenes in HD!!! Reply with quote
I've posted them in the forums, for now. I'll be making a dedicated page for them soon. This will serve as an announcement for people who don't scroll all the way down. You can view the topic in the Movies section, or by clicking the link:

I'd like to take this opportunity to go over a few stats regarding the Halo Wars cutscenes project specifically and the Halo cutscenes project in general.

Chronological order be damned, I started recording with Halo 2, so I'll start there. The Halo 2 cutscenes took me about 2 months to record. I used FRAPS along with Halo 2 Vista. I recorded in full 1920x1080p HD. The files were cut and rendered in Sony Vegas 7.0 in WMV HD and WMV SD versions. The source files went on a secondary harddrive I had dedicated to cutscenes, there were 54 files totaling 97 GB in filesize! All in all the WMV versions of the rendered cutscenes is 3.19 GB. I uploaded them to infectionist.com and sent links to Louis Wu of Halo.bungie.org, and he converted them to quicktime for me. I transfered over those quicktime files to infectionist.com, giving me a total of 6 GB for the Halo 2 cutscenes! Wow!

Ok, next project I worked on was the Halo 1 cutscenes. This took about the same length of time as the Halo 2 ones did. I used pretty much the same process as with Halo 2, only instead of recording in 1920x1080, which Halo PC didn't support, I recorded in 1600x1200 then cropped in Vegas to 1600x900, which scaled to 1280x720. I used Sony Vegas 7.0 for these as well. The source files for these ended up being a bit smaller, 44 files totaling 62.9 GB, still a hefty number. After being rendered all out the MV HD and SD versions were 1.95 GB. Same process as before, I uploaded them, sent them to Louis Wu, he converted them, I transfered them back. The Halo 1 cutscene folder is 3.5 GB.

Feb. 5th, the Halo Wars demo comes out. I play through it a few times, then realize that I should be recording the cutscenes...D'oh! Well I get to it, there are only a few anyway. I spend the time to record the in-gmae cutscenes as well as the between-level ones. This time I didn't have the ability to use FRAPS to record, I had to rely on my HD capture card. The source files for this are rather small, just 1.06 GB, though I saved the stream files my capture card outputs as well as the converted WMVs so the folder adds up to 2.08 GB. Again, I used Sony Vegas 7.0 to render, but this time I rendered the Quicktime versions myself, saving Mr. Wu the trouble. All together the rendered cutscenes adds up to 728 MB for the demo, very small.

And here we are at the Halo Wars full game cutscenes. I tell you, these were a pain in my...well, it was a pain. There were so many problems rendering these out I almost gave up. I again used my HD capture card to record these, and I also kept both the stream files and the converted WMVs. The WMVs add up to 3.40 GB, and all together with the streams it's 6.77 GB. That's more like it. Also again, I rendered out the Quicktime versions myself, but something went weird and I still had to have Louis Wu convert them for me. No biggie. Not counting the Demo, this project took the least amount of time, with the first file being recorded on April 8th. I used Sony Vegas 8.1 for these, since 7.0 and 8.0 both froze everytime I tried rendering...dunno why. All rendered the totals add up to 2.5 GB, respectable.

And for a total number, which I know you're all waiting for...

13 GB. That's what my shell window I have open is reporting to me. All together the rendered versions of Halo 1, Halo 2, Halo Wars Demo, and Halo Wars' cutscenes adds up to 13 GB. Amazing, that's a lot of file space. I wanted to keep things organized so I made a new subdomain of Infectionist.com called cutscenes.infectionist.com. This'll be a more suitable home for this large amount of files than where I had them before. Technically as of this posting I have 2 copies of all the files on my server, totaling 26 GB of files! I'll be deleting the old copies once I update some links, and the new permanent home will be cutscenes.infectionist.com.

Well, I hope you've all enjoyed this write up, it's probably not as informative as I would have liked, but if any of you actually read it, you deserve a cookie. I'm sure you all want to go watch the cutscenes now, so I'll let you at it. Enjoy!

That's not as big of a filesize as I would expect but nice job. And the HW cutscenes went fast.

What's not as big?

I forgot to add, the source files for all 4 projects put together adds up to about 172 GB (that's including 750 MB from the Bioshock Audio Diary Library, too). That's a big number and it's pushed my 200 GB HDD into the red:

I meant that the HD video files were lots smaller than I thought. Aren't they usually like 1 gb per min or something?

Noooo, about 25MB/min rendered. You're thinking uncompressed, the Halo 2 source files are uncompressed and they're about 1GB/min. Like I said, the source files are huge, but after I render them, and they're compressed, the filesizes go down a lot.

Oh ok, that's what I am confused on. Get it now...except for the fact that not sure how it compress it about 40x and keep the quality about the same?

When I record it it's completely uncompressed. WMV compression is very good, as is quicktime. Uncompressed video is HUGE think if you were to have 100 still images at their highest possible quality and at 1920x1080 resolution. It'd be pretty big, and 100 still images is only a little more than 3 seconds (or a little more than 1.5 at 60FPS), so that helps explain it. Plus, I downsampled, remember. I recorded at 1920x1080 and rendered out at 1280x720.

You know, one thing can be said for these cutscenes, it is bringing a lot of new members to the site...only thing is very few of them are posting anything. Little do they know they'll get deleted if they don't post.
