Spherical Panoramas: Mobilized

You probably all remember the Spherical Panoramas that I did before and during the Halo Reach Beta. A lot of people liked them, they're still in the first results that show up in Google when searching for "spherical panorama halo." That makes me smile, that something that I made was so well-recieved.

But something was missing. I'd wanted for months to be able to see these panoramas on my phone (Droid,) but until recently, Flash wasn't supported on Android devices. Well, with the 2.2 (FroYo) update to Android, that was made possible, and to celebrate I went ahead and reworked all the Spherical Panoramas to work on compatible mobile devices.

The new mobile versions have a smaller resolution, making their filesize smaller and easier to load on the phones, but they still look fantastic. My phone has a resolution of 854x480, so I used that as a baseline and made the tilesize for each panorama...854 pixels! Simple enough.

The link is still the same, that hasn't changed, but now there's a mobile-detection script that determines if the requesting browser is on a mobile device. If it is, it serves up the mobile-optimized version rather than the large, desktop version. Here are the links to the panoramas:

Please keep in mind that if you visit these links on your computer, you will not see a change. Visit this thread on an Android mobile device with the latest Android 2.2 update and Adobe Flash installed, then click any of those links and you will see the mobile versions of the panoramas. Also, be sure to click the Fullscreen button on the far right of the navigation controls at the bottom of the page.

I would still like to pursue the idea that I had a while back. I want to make an actual Android App specifically for viewing spherical panoramas. I would build in an option to link directly to Infectionist and check for any new panoramas when they become available, the app would then display a notification in your notification tray. That probably won't happen for a while though, since I have exactly 0 experience programming for Android.

As expected, it didn't work for my Omnia using Opera Mobile on Windows Mobile. I got the error message: "Flash Lite 2.1 for Windows Mobile 5 will support Flash 7 content authored for mobile devices only."

My sister just got a Droid and I was playing with it. That phone is so sick! I definitely plan on going Droid for my next phone.

Eviscerate: Yeah, I love my phone. I've had it for about a year now and beside some battery problems and a pretty bad issue I had with he 2.2 update, I haven't had any problems with it. The battery issue was fixed with a (free) battery replacement from Verizon, and the 2.2 issue was resolved by them replacing the phone, then replacing the SD card. It's definitely a badass phone.

s.k.: Do you have an Android phone, or are you just viewing on the computer?

Isn't there some way to change the id on your browser so webpages think you are a on a mobile browser? Forget the way but does anyone else know?

Yeah, there's a plugin for Firefox that lets you change your useragent. Don't know why you'd want to do that though other than for testing (I used it.)

Why do so many things not support flash? Most phones, apple products (i think), 64-bit internet explorer... and some others. It's quite inconvenient.
