Peoples opinions on this game are really extreme in the positive and the negative.
Darksiders. It takes place during the modern day in a world where heaven and hell are always on the brink of war and the only thing that keeps them in balance and order are the 7 seals that the 4 riders of the apocalypse protect.
Well someone steals the seals and it summons War, one of the riders, he happens to be your character. War is summoned to the Earth being devoured by the ongoing siege between the Demons and Angels and he must find out what is going on. It forces you to fight through battle after battle with both sides in each battle field, and unfortunately enough, all of the enemies have player hating syndrome and the two sides will gang up on you. When you started you were at full power but every once in a while you collapse to the ground and you lose some power.
You eventually run across an angel that knows you, and he even seems to know something about what is going on, but he is quickly taken out by a powerful demon and you have to fight him now. After the battle, during a cutscene, the demon beats you and you get transported back to where you came from.
When you awaken you are in a fire based dimension where you are going to be executed by "your bosses". War then says that since 'it was all his fault' that the demons got out that he will go back to the earth and try to fix what has happened, and that if he fails 'their sentence will be carried out anyways.' i.e. He will be dead. They agree and sent you back where you quickly learn that it 100 years has already passed since he was there last, and humans are all dead.
Now on to the gameplay. Darksiders has a simple combat system. Jam the X button to kill things, but every once in a while you will have to use a secondary item. You have secondary weapons like a scythe or hammerfist gauntlet that you use with Y, and you have a ranged weapons, used to fight special enemies and solve puzzles, like the boomerang, pistol, hookshot, and portalgun that you use with RT. The combat is like a mix of God of War/Ninja Gaiden/Devil May Cry 4 and Zelda. Most enemies to bash with your overly large sword until they have this GIANT sign for you to press B to insta-kill them when they are weak, and then 1% of the other require you to use something else to hurt them first THEN YOU BASH THEM TO DEATH WITH THE SWORD. Watching the fighting can get repetitive, but the change in enemies and scenes allow you to keep from getting bored.
Now to the part of the game that just flat out stole from Zelda. You have to beat dungeons, where you solve lots of puzzles that have switches of some kind, you get small keys and big keys, you find a weapon that helps you solve the rest of the puzzles and kill the boss, and finally you get a heart container when you do. It's so bad in that sense, I didn't even need to mention that you have this spirit living in your arm that comes out to tell you how to solve puzzles and is extremely annoying. Might as well have named it Navi.
The game is really well made too. The graphics are not state of the art by any means but I have seen really bad graphics in my time, and Darksiders is not bad by any means. The sounds are really great. When you hack into a demons flesh, it really sounds like it is happening, and the voice acting might not be THE BEST, but it is humorous and witty at times and is definitely good.
Even with all the copying (notice the portalgun, yeah.. it's even orange and blue portals that you make..), the game is really enjoyable. It has a good story, and you meet a lot of love-able characters. It is worth the money you pay for it. Especially if you like Zelda and God of War.
I will give Darksiders 8/10 so try it if you can.
